Our Winter Salon Group Exhibition opens this Thursday 17th - 26th June, showcasing the talented work of @julzberesford_artist, @katebsart and @alixhunterart.

In the suburb of Bulli, where Kate Broadfoot resides, there is a lookout called Sublime Point. The name is apt - for the sliver of the NSW South Coast it faces is truely enchanting. Broadfoot’s art is a homage to this local sublime- painting coarse seas and steep headlands before turning her attention to the homes that cling to the bush edge.

Sophie begins with a characteristic in mind, sketches out the shape, unique in angles and curves, then slowly moulds the desired form and allows the essence to emerge.

Damp earth and falling rain unlocks a singular, almost cryptic aroma - ‘petrichor’ - named for a combination of plant oils released on contact with water. Wiltshires ceramics seem to talk to this earthly merger - gorgeously coloured in deep greens and navy blues

Ground and water are again referenced in the surface texture of these vessels. Outside, they are coarse to the touch but in … lustrous - like a rain drop.

The Damp Earth. Falling Rain. vase series is the debut of ceramic works by Wiltshire, and has been developed to evoke the sensory experience of a rainforest floor.

To echo the rhythm of falling rain, no two vases hold the same silhouette, height, or opening. Each vase is wheel thrown and immediately coated with layers of underglaze and slip. While still wet, Wiltshire uses water to reveal the coloured layers in a burst of action mark making. Although the process is unpredictable, its precarious nature and immediacy ensures each piece is truly one of a kind.

The surfaces of Wiltshires ceramics are adorned with what look like the burrow marks of termites ... which is fitting given the elementary and raw feel to these vessels. Few other artistic mediums are as immediately indicative of their earthly origins as clay. Originally trained at Sydney College of the Arts as a printmaker, Chrystie has been somewhat obsessed with clay for the last 14 years, reveling in the medium and its endless possibilities.

All works are made in a studio between high cliffs and the sea where verdant flora and fauna are a daily inspiration and functional and decorative ceramic pieces fit seamlessly into a slower, more considered pace of life.

Finalist – Little Things Art Prize 2018.

“Rejecting the ‘perfection’ of reproduced machine made items, my work is thrown on the wheel and then trimmed and painted by hand.

These new works use kiln fired pigments rather than glaze to investigate a painterly mark akin to gouache, where the brushstrokes are visible and matte colours tell a story of an Australian summer.”

Tina Psarianos’ ceramic practice focuses on the magnificent Vessel. The clay Vessel is to be revered as it has borne witness to humanity through epochs and across cultures and by sharing with humans, a mouth, belly, waist and a foot, it represents a sculptural expression and metaphor for feminity.

“Through the use of ancient coiling techniques, I transcend timelines; feeling both humbled and regenerated. Drawing inspiration from silhouettes of ancient ritual vessels, the “Soaring Voices” series of vessels features rhythmic and repeating loopy appendages which provide a visual focal point and result in a fusion of utilitarian and decorative functions. These little vessels are flamboyant and light hearted and I hear them sing joyfully with soaring voices as I hope they sing for you.”
