Elena Strohfeldt is an Australian artist based in Melbourne. She is self-taught and started working with ceramics in 2020, shortly after establishing her brand Elso Collective.
She hand builds raw clay into modern ceramic sculptures combining art, design and functionality. Each of her pieces is watertight and fired to stoneware in textured earthy tones of brown, cream and sand.
In her short time as a ceramic artist, she has been selected for prestigious artist markets in Melbourne including Melbourne Ceramics Market and Rose St Artist Market. Her work is also stocked in stores across VIC and QLD and has been exhibited in galleries including Printmaking Gallery in Fitzroy.
“The Lotus collection was dreamed up during the Melbourne lockdowns in 2021 and is inspired by the hope and beauty the Lotus flower represents. Growing deep in the mud and far away from the sun, sooner or later, the Lotus reaches the light to bloom. Even when its roots are in the dirtiest waters, the Lotus produces the most beautiful flower. Beauty can come from even the most difficult of times and it is only a matter of time before each and every one of us reaches our own light. Each piece is made using a pinching and coiling technique before being shaped into its unique form. The raw texture of the grogged clay and an unglazed finish emphasizes its beautiful imperfections.”
