Annabel Lahz: ‘Musings’ (16th – 26th March)

Musings is a collection of figurative characters drawn partly from the built environment and partly from the imagination. It is an exploration of singular forms perceived as objects in their own right; or as an ensemble the interrelationships defining their own imagined city.

As individuals, some characters are rotated or turned upside down and propped, whilst others have pattern or colour applied as a means of changing our perception of their form and demeanour. Loosely these devices organise the characters into a series of extended families of forms.

The figurative nature of the pieces imbues each with their own personality – some restless with a sense of imminent movement, whilst others stoic, as though carved from stone. In smaller more intimate groups, we can imagine them in conversation. As they are choreographed into different arrangements with one another our perception and interpretation of their spatial and emotional relationship shifts creating different potential narratives between the characters. In these scenarios the space defined between the forms becomes as important as the form itself.
