KEIKO MATSUI is a Japanese-born, Melbourne based ceramicist. She completed a Bachelor of Fine Art (Honours) degree in 2006 at the National Art School in Sydney.
Her work begins on the potter’s wheel and is then distorted, torn and reassembled to evoke a quiet and subtle abstraction. Making and reinterpreting objects is Keiko’s focus. She pays particular attention to the form, proportion and profile of a vessel and the interconnectedness between the interior and exterior.
Keiko has exhibited widely both nationally and internationally in both group and solo presentations . Her recent achievements include North Queensland Ceramics Award ,Gosford Art Prize , Vitrify Alcorso Ceramic Award , John Fries Memorial Award, Small Art Object Prize in Vallauris, France and the Woollahra Small Sculpture Prize.
The blue and white porcelain series is one of Keiko’s signature works and she has been developing this work since 2003. Keiko’s delicate and imaginative botanical drawings are an extension of her love of Japanese calligraphy.
Flow blue series is Keiko’s new body of work, here she uses blue glazes to express abstraction within the porcelain bowl. They are finely thrown, yet the foot is hand-carved.
