Gus Clutterbuck expertly blends Chinese symbolism with elements of Australiana in his cobalt paintings and ceramics, embodying his profound connection to both cultures.
Clutterbuck’s passion for art was ignited during his travels in his 20s, and upon enrolling full-time in art school, he sought a 3D medium to complement his photographic pursuits. It was during this exploration that he encountered ceramics, which soon became a central focus of his practice. Clutterbuck studied Ceramics and Drawing at the North Adelaide School of Art, where he honed his skills with mentorships, notably with Huang Fei, a master porcelain painter from Jingdezhen, China.
Currently, Clutterbuck operates from a small studio located on the back deck of his home in Adelaide. The studio is a testament to his resourcefulness, furnished with remnants from previous projects including a cocktail bar, a disco ball, and a Chinese crate repurposed as a workbench. His work is deeply personal, reflecting themes of family and country. Clutterbuck believes that the essence of art lies in the heart and lived experiences, which is vividly expressed through his creations.
